Sound Match: hear the word, tap the picture

Free to try, with no sign-up. Works with any language pair, or in one language only.

Sound Match is a listening game: the child hears a word and taps the picture it names.

Sound Match: listen, then tap. Works with any language pair, or in one language only.

How it plays

  1. Tap the sound button to hear a word. You can replay it as often as you like.
  2. Look at the pictures on the screen and tap the one that matches what you heard.
  3. A correct answer plays the word again, with a happy sound.
  4. A wrong answer gets a low tone, and the next round begins.
  5. At the end of the round your child earns one to three stars.

Two languages, or one

The word is played in the first language. When your child gets it right, they hear it again in the second language, so the same picture is linked to both words. With one language, the word is repeated in that language.

What it practises

  • Listening closely
  • Linking a sound to its meaning
  • Recognising a word without any reading

Who it suits

Sound Match needs no reading at all, so it works well for toddlers who are starting to understand more words than they can say.

A tip for parents

If your child isn't sure, replay the sound together and point to each picture in turn. Then let them choose.
