Flashcards: see a picture, tap a word, hear it

Free to try, with no sign-up. Works with any language pair, or in one language only.

Flashcards is the EveryLingo game where a child looks at a picture and taps each word to hear it spoken, in one language or two.

Flashcards: tap a word to hear it. Works with any language pair, or in one language only.

How it plays

  1. A large picture fills the screen.
  2. Under it, each chosen language has its own button with the written word and a speaker icon.
  3. Tap a button to hear the word. Tap it again whenever you like to hear it again.
  4. Tap Next for the next card. A progress bar shows how far through the category you are.

Two languages, or one

With two languages you get two buttons, the first in a deeper blue and the second in a lighter one, so both languages get the same space and neither is the translation of the other. With one language you get a single button.

What it practises

  • Connecting a picture, a sound and a written word
  • Meeting new words for the first time
  • Repeated listening, as often as your child likes

Who it suits

Flashcards is the gentlest of the six games and the best place to start. There are no wrong answers, so it suits babies and toddlers meeting a category for the first time.

A tip for parents

Sit together and say the word yourself after the app, in your family's own accent. Animals and Food make good first categories, because children see them every day.

Frequently asked questions

Can flashcards play in two languages at the same time?

Yes. Each card shows one button per language, and your child can tap each one to hear the word in that language.

Can I make flashcards from my own photos?

Yes. Cards you create with your own photo and voice also play in this game and in the other five.

Does my child need to read?

No. Each word is spoken, and your child can simply tap and listen.
